Customised Extra-Long Vito Makes Life Easier For Douch Family Funeral Directors

Douch Family Funeral Directors have seven offices and two coroners’ contracts, so their vehicles need to be reliable and up to the job. Jonathan Stretch explains why their most recent purchase of a removal vehicle goes the extra mile.

“Our previous removal vehicle was a Vito with a Superior UK Rise & Fall deck, but we needed more space,” says Jonathan. “We have used Superior for all our fleet vehicles for well over a decade, so I approached them and asked what they could do. When they explained that we could have our existing lift moved across to a new extra-long Vito, I knew we had found the ideal solution.”

With the exception of one Ford ambulance, Douch’s fleet is made up of Mercedes vehicles supplied over the last 15 years by Superior UK, so Jonathan knew he wanted to stick with the Mercedes mark.

“Mercedes is a great brand which is economical and holds its value,” he says. “Superior UK are always able to supply us with exactly what we need.”

Kevin Smith from Superior UK was delighted to supply Douch Family Funeral Directors with their latest vehicle.

“We enjoy a good relationship with the Douch family, having first served them in 2005 with a fleet of new Binz Mercedes hearse and limousines,” he says. “We have built upon that first encounter and continue to enjoy supplying the family with quality vehicles which support their professionalism.”

“Douch’s new Vito is something quite different to the norm, equipped with a secondary bulkhead and storage area, making it perfect for such a busy funeral director firm with two coroners’ contracts.”

Jonathan’s investment in the new Vito was made easier by Superior’s ability to take the Rise & Fall decking out of their old van and move it into the new Vito.

“This is something we have wanted to do for a long time, and I’m so pleased it worked,” said Jonathan. “Superior serviced all the parts, gave it new hydraulics, and completely removed the lifts and put it into the new vehicle – this meant a great saving for us!”

Douch’s new extra-long Vito means an extra 290mm behind the cab which is used as wardrobe space for staff suits and coats, making life much easier for this busy funeral firm. It also has inbuilt sat nav, so staff can get on the road faster.

“The new Vito is already turning heads,” says Jonathan. “It is a great addition to our fleet, and we thank Superior UK for helping us with another quality vehicle.”

Douch Family Funeral Directors has been owned and run by the family since 1910.

Superior UK Hosts FC Douch At Binz Factory in Germany

It’s not often that you get to see how the vehicles you drive every day are built. But that’s exactly what happened when Jonathan Stretch from FC Douch & Sons (Funerals) Ltd in Dorset was invited to the Binz factory in Stuttgart, Germany.

The trip was part of Superior UK’s planned visit to Binz. Kevin Smith of Superior was travelling to Pilato in Italy and Binz in Germany to discuss customer requirements and get involved in the development of future products.

The Douch Family Funeral Directors have been customers of Superior for more than 10 years. In that time, Kevin has sourced and delivered all their funeral vehicles. With 8 branches across Dorset, Douch Family Funeral Directors run a large fleet of Binz and Mercedes Benz funeral vehicles and personal vehicles.

As part of this very special customer visit, Jonathan Stretch from Douch Family Funeral Directors received a personal tour of the Binz factory. “It was a wonderful trip,” he said. “From the minute I landed, I had an informative, entertaining and amusing time. Everyone at Binz was welcoming and obviously very proud of everything they are doing at the factory.

“Having purchased many Mercedes Benz vehicles over the past 10 years, I was keen to see the actual build process. When Kevin at Superior said he could help facilitate this, I jumped at the chance! We are long serving customers of Superior and this just demonstrates Kevin’s genuine commitment to customer relationships.”

Jonathan was particularly keen to see the new E Class. “It was fascinating to see how the cars are built from the ground up,” he said. “We are already considering the new E Class as future hearses and limousines. Getting to see the vehicle in the factory gave us a new level of insight into the build quality.”
During the visit, Kevin and Jonathan also enjoyed visiting the historic Mercedes-Benz museum at Stuttgart.

Kevin was delighted to have a role in hosting Douch Family Funeral Director at Binz. “We have enjoyed working with the Douch family over the past decade and it was a pleasure to host them,” he said. “We really enjoyed Jonathan’s company and appreciate him taking the time out to visit Binz.”

More than 25 vehicles over 10 years from Superior UK to F C Douch of Dorset

When Dorset funeral directors F C Douch updated their fleet early in 2014, they asked Kevin Smith at Superior UK to provide their preferred Binz vehicles. The three new hearses and three new limousines mark the latest in a long list of vehicles sourced for the Douch family by Superior UK.

F C Douch is an independent funeral director, with seven offices throughout Dorset and on the Isle of Purbeck. Founded by Frederick “FC” Douch in 1910, the business remains owned and run by the family. Managing Director Nick Douch represents the fourth generation. Along with his father, Peter, he oversees the day-to-day running of the business including the management of its funeral fleet. They explain why Superior UK have been their vehicle supplier of choice for over 10 years.

“We have used Superior UK for our new funeral vehicles for 10 years,” said Nick. “Kevin, and his father Peter, have sourced us over 25 vehicles in that time. We have a large fleet and keep it updated in order to maintain safety standards, appearances, and the expectations of the families we serve.”

In 2013, Nick felt it was time to update the existing fleet, and approached Kevin at Superior to discuss the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class range of funeral vehicles from Binz. The result of that conversation was three new hearses and three new limousines.

“There are certainly plenty of other vehicle specialists out there,” said Nick, “and we have looked at other manufacturers and suppliers. To be perfectly honest, some other makes of vehicle do score more highly on single aspects. But the all-round design, safety, build and finish of Binz vehicles wins us over every time. And the service we receive from Kevin and Peter at Superior UK makes us reluctant to go anywhere else. We are extremely happy with the relationship.”

F C Douch’s entire fleet is now Binz and Mercedes Benz, including removal vehicles and company vehicles. “This latest delivery concludes our third fleet renewal,” said Nick, “and all 25 or so vehicles across the three fleets have been supplied by Superior.”

Kevin Smith at Superior UK said he has thoroughly enjoyed serving FC Douch over the past 10 years and looks forward to helping the family in the future. “Working with the Douch family is always a delight,” he said. “They are clear with their requirements and have a strong vision of how funeral vehicles can strengthen and support their business. I always enjoy time with them discussing options and solutions.”

Nick agreed that the quality, finish and look of Binz funeral vehicles is a good fit for his own company’s image. “We are known for attention to detail and reliability,” he said, “and Mercedes Benz displays those same key qualities. I am always looking at the long term aspects of the business, and when we purchase vehicles I consider running costs, maintenance and second hand value. We really like the overall reliability of these vehicles, being manufactured on an uprated chassis and designed from the ground up as a hearse and limousine is a major bonus for us. And the low emissions of the eco models really contribute to lower running costs.”
